We got to take time out from our desks this afternoon to have a cup of tea or coffee and a cake with Karen, our chief executive, who's retiring at the end of the week. Brad was there, so we had an in-depth chat about The Prisoner much to the bemusement of Demelza who's never heard of it. We met a guy called Pete who, after exchanging brief introductions about work and confiding a little knowledge of what one of Karen's leaving presents (lying wrapped on a nearby chair) was, soon raised the topic of football - he was a Cornishman, who'd become an adopted Southampton fan since settling down here.

When Karen came round to us for a quick chat, Brad and Mike both asked her if she'd have a photo taken with them. She was a little intrigued - perhaps wondering if they were taking the mick - but she stood with each of them in turn while the other took a snap on his mobile. Brad reckoned he was going to frame his in a fluffy pink love heart...

A guy clapped his hands for attention, introduced Karen and presented her with her gifts, then she said a few words. She mentioned that while tea, coffee and cakes had been laid on, she was "more of a wine and peanut person." And so say all of us, madam! She added "But I know you have to drive home." Back in our section afterwards, Ray mentioned that his preferences mirrored Karen's. "Yes, where were the peanuts?" I said; his rejoinder was "Where was the wine?"
